最近发现自己写code还是有不少问题，总是会在一些小地方犯重要的错误。
这里，还是要学习Comars他们在ACM比赛中的一个经验，不要Copy/Paste code，所有的code都自己认真敲键盘，就算有重复的code也要再敲一遍，虽然费点时间，但是这样会避免很多错误。比如你可能copy一段code，还需要改一些变量名或者做小的修改，可能稍微少改了一处，结果导致一个bug。这种bug还很难查找......所以，宁可多花一点时间写更solid的code了

As someone leading four or five lives' worth of stuff to do... having a "Not to do list" when I'm getting jammed up makes a lot of sense. It means being more aware of what you're wasting your time on and... frees up more time to be filled with real good stuff.

As Web Worker Daily points out, the Someday Maybe list is where GTDers can get prolific with their to dos without feeling too much stress, but if you're someone who gets overwhelmed at lists when they start stretching into forever, even the Someday Maybe list can get stressful. Reviewing your to dos and figuring out your "not to dos" is a good way to clean house and catalog those things that you've prioritized out of your life.

Microsoft embedding nerdy photo in Vista DVDs?

Apparently a blogger named Kwisatz has uncovered a "secret" photo embedded into the hologram that encompasses the Windows Vista Business DVD. This being Microsoft, the photo naturally depicts three total nerds, grinning excessively at their own cleverness. Of course, this could be a total Photoshop, but somehow we find such an embedding eerily plausible, so we're going to stay cautiously optimistic that this is real. Kiss Boring Interfaces Goodbye With Apple's New Animated OS

Disco is software for burning disks that illustrates a new approach to interfaces: It smokes while it burns. If you blow into your computer's microphone, the smoke blows across your desktop.

When Steve Jobs takes the stage Monday at Apple's programmers conference, he's likely to give the world a glimpse of an upgraded Mac operating system that could herald the biggest changes to the machine's interface in 30 years.

At the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, Jobs will probably show off Leopard, a Mac OS X update due in October that he has promised contains "top secret" features. But perhaps the most important feature is one that has been overlooked by many Apple fans: a new set of tools for building program interfaces called Core Animation.

Core Animation will allow programmers to give their applications flashy, animated interfaces. Some developers think Core Animation is so important, it will usher in the biggest changes to computer interfaces since the original Mac shipped three decades ago.

"The revolution coming with Core Animation is akin to the one that came from the original Mac in 1984," says Wil Shipley, developer of the personal media-cataloging application Delicious Library. "We're going to see a whole new world of user-interface metaphors with Core Animation."

Shipley predicts that Core Animation will kick-start a new era of interface experimentation, and may lead to an entirely new visual language for designing desktop interfaces. The traditional desktop may become a multilayered three-dimensional environment where windows flip around or zoom in and out. Double-clicks and keystrokes could give way to mouse gestures and other forms of complex user input.

The Core Animation "revolution" is already starting to happen. Apple's iPhone at the end of the month will see people using their fingers to flip through media libraries, and pinching their fingers together to resize photos.

Shipley's initial release of Delicious Library, with its glossy, highly refined interface, gave birth to a new breed of developers dubbed the "Delicious generation." For these Mac developers, interface experimentation is one of the big appeals of programming.

Applications like AppZapper have taken traditional tasks (deleting application files) and added a fun layer of animation to the mix -- this isn't your father's rm command. Disco is a disc-burning program that features smoke animation that reacts to sound -- blow into the mike, and the smoke blows away.

But creating animations like those in AppZapper or Disco is presently a complex and difficult task.

Leopard's Core Animation will change that, giving the next generation of developers a set of tools that will allow them to easily create new, nonstandard, interactive interfaces.

Some Mac developers are so excited by Core Animation they are going to drop support for previous versions of their software, which won’t display their new interfaces on older versions of OS X.

"Our customers are going to have to upgrade their OS if they want to upgrade our program," Shipley says. "We realized any app we released based on Tiger (the current version of OS X) was going to look really pathetic when Leopard came out." 

After getting a peek at Delicious Library 2, which hasn’t yet been shown publicly, Mac programmer Scott Stevenson wrote that the program is "going to be a major eye-opener for Mac developers. This last point is important. Whatever you thought was state-of-the-art in Tiger is going to be blown to bits with all of the new API (application programming interface) available in Leopard."  

Allan Odgaard, the developer of TextMate, says the next version of the text editor will only work on Leopard.   Because of Apple's nondisclosure agreements, most of the Mac developers approached by Wired News declined to discuss Core Animation or any interface changes they might be planning. None would provide screenshots. 

The shift toward nonstandard interfaces isn't necessarily new. Kai's Power Tools, a set of plug-ins for Adobe Systems' Photoshop, featured what was at the time a revolutionary interface for editing image files. But the developer, Kai Kruse, was too far ahead of his time -- the majority of Mac users disliked the novel interface, which broke with conventions and ignored Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, or HIG.

The HIG is a set of rules published by Apple to ensure consistency across different applications. It's become the bible of Mac programmers.

However, with the growing popularity of "widgets" -- mini, task-specific applications for checking sports scores or finding cheap gas -- users are starting to accept novel interfaces. And they often expect the sort of highly graphical interaction that Apple's new Core Animation enables.

路上和Dai Qiang聊天的时候说起，其实一篇Paper写出来的顺序，和实际进行研究时候的顺序往往是不同的。一个Idea往往很吸引我们，Paper很可能写的很引人入胜，但实际上很多时候的研究顺序确是反的，首先，先有一些现有的方法，先有一些实现上的东西，而后才有的KeyIdea，而后才有的整个论文的写作思路。
所以，看paper还是要认真，体会其中的精要所在.............

最近在做Texture Synthesis，本来在之前的时候还自以为是的读了几篇Texture Synthesis的Paper，写过一个Survey。结果，真正自己做起来，才发现有些东西并没有理解。而且，在那次做Survey时候读过的一篇论文中[Ashikhmin2001]提到的 coherent synthesis居然没有真正理解（这本来是该篇论文的主要贡献之一）。所以，结论是看paper不认真，只是大概了解了其idea，并没有真正的想明白其中的奥妙。
其实，类似的例子还是有的，比如Sun Jian 的 Lazy Snapping 还有 Image Completion with Structure Propagation 都有很深的数学内涵，自己第一次看的时候都没能体会。看来今后读paper还是要认真。

Microsoft Surface

微软CEO Steve Ballmer 正式揭开Microsoft Surface的面纱。让我们一睹下一代电脑操作界面的芳容。Surface绝不仅仅是一个触摸屏核心的UI系统，Surface已经摒弃了传统的鼠标操作的概念。不仅仅支持手势，多个目标（多个手指同时触摸），甚至还可以识别放在其上的物品。

虽然surface也已经有了相当长的发展历史，从2001年到现在已经发展了6年。Surface距离真正的应用还是有一段的距离，不过，相信在不久的将来，计算机人机交互界面的革命一定会改变我们当前对计算机的全部认识。

At the D: All Things Digital conference Wednesday, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer will unveil Microsoft Surface, the first in a new category of surface computing products from Microsoft that will “break down traditional barriers between people and technology”.

A Surface computer is able to recognize physical objects from a paintbrush to a cell phone and allows hands-on, direct control of content such as photos, music and maps. Surface turns an ordinary tabletop into a dynamic surface that provides interaction with all forms of digital content through natural gestures, touch and physical objects.

The new product is aimed directly at hotels, retail establishments, restaurants and public entertainment venues and should be commercially available towards the end of the year.

It’s an interesting product in that it’s completely out of left field. Microsoft gives examples of ordering a beverage during a meal with just the tap of a finger and quickly browsing through music and dragging favorite songs onto a personal playlist by moving a finger across the screen. Build this into a bar and you’d get one-touch beer service although I’m not sure if they’ve found a way to work out when your beer glass is empty so replenishment becomes automatic, maybe in a later version.

The practical uses for Surface at the point of sale are broad. This is touch screen point of sale technology at a new level.

这个月好夸张啊，没有四处乱吃，没有啥特殊活动，没有买书。还好昨天给饭卡充值，否则这周就夸张了orz....

不过，由于这个月买了代理主机+域名花掉了大头的money，不过那个是2年的费用，不好在这里计算。

总归，还是具体看看分析吧。
吃饭的份额占的更多了，看来通过记账来紧缩银根的计划算是好好的得到了完成
不过，也看出这个月也算是够糟糕的，基本上大部分的指出都是生活基本保障的支出
吃饭+超市（生活用品）将近一半。

至于预算部分，各类内容都控制在了预算之内，一部分是由于预算确实需要改进，另一部分也是由于这个月确实很少需要花钱的特殊的地方。改进预算的时候还是要具体的分析吧。恩。
暂且这样吧

另外，加上代理主机的钱之后这个月的预算还是有盈余，总归还是不错di

绕过ExchangeServer 用Outlook转发新邮件

这样收邮件就很麻烦

不过，我们可以利用Macro宏来实现邮件转发

需要利用Outlook的NewMail事件来完成：

（1）tool->macro->Visual Basic Editor，打开Visual Basic编辑器。

（2）在ThisOutlookSession对象中输入如下代码：

Got Cash? You Can Loan Money Like a Big-Time Banker

Jane Boon wants to see you stripped down to your financial undies. Boon, an engineer whose husband is former Time Editor-in-Chief Norman Pearlstein, is a new kind of loan officer, but she is not affiliated with a bank.

Boon is one of 30 or so wealthy individuals who have lent out more than $100,000 apiece through Prosper, a 15-month-old venture that combines social networking with online auctions in an attempt to create a lucrative new marketplace for loans.

Using Prosper, lenders like Boon are rerouting money from banks, mutual funds or other assets to thousands of U.S. residents, who are borrowing the money for myriad reasons, from consolidating credit-card debt to expanding an existing small business.

"We're imposing Web 2.0 concepts on a very old-guard business," says John Witchel, chief technology officer and co-founder of Prosper.

Prosper's marketplace is a blend of eBay-like bidding auctions and social networking, and is conceptually related to the emerging world of microcredit.

But unlike microcredit ventures such as Grameen and Kiva, Prosper is aimed at U.S. borrowers, not the developing world.

Wannabe borrowers give Prosper permission to verify their identity and allow the company to access their financial data as collected by Experian, one of the three big credit-scoring agencies.

Prosper then gives the borrower a credit rating and helps match his or her loan request with a number of lenders. A $5,000 loan, for instance, might be funded by 50 people who each lend $100.

Lenders use borrowers' credit scores and other financial data to set interest rates that balance risk and return, while borrowers assemble their loans piecemeal from lenders' offers, giving preference to the lowest interest rates offered to them.

Borrowers have been attracted to Prosper because its auction model offers the possibility of getting lower fixed rates, particularly as part of a group of borrowers, and loans can be funded quickly -- sometimes just days after you've applied. Also, Prosper makes it easier to get loans for certain kinds of businesses, like eBay storefronts, that are difficult to fund through traditional bank loans.

Prosper is a chance for lenders to invest in an arena formerly off-limits to all but the biggest corporations: consumer debt. Prosper CEO Chris Larsen says the traditional money market is a paternalistic system where access to information is restricted and an elite few decide how it plays out, whereas Prosper is open to anyone willing to put in their money.

"It is the first time this large market has been opened up to the average investor," says Larsen, who sold his previous online lending business, E-Loan, for $300 million in 2005.

The ability to invest in a lucrative market formerly restricted to money managers is what attracted Boon. After an initial $2,000 investment to test the waters, she went all in. "The potential returns seemed great so I transferred more money," says Boon. To date, she has loaned a total of $125,000 to more than 800 people. Greg Bequette made a similar calculation when deciding to lend using Prosper. "I was afraid that I would miss the opportunity," says Bequette, an accountant for the University of California system. Moving to lock in loans early, he transferred half a million dollars within the first two moths after joining Prosper, making him the second-largest lender in the system.

Behind the scenes, lender profiles and activities are public, making it easy to track who's a successful investor -- and what they're doing right. That troubles some, such as Jonathan Hoenig of Capitalistpig Asset Management in Chicago. "I manage money for other people," he says. "I like to keep my cards closer to the vest." He has loaned around $150,000 to nearly 1,500 people.

Additionally, the number of loans that have gone bad is higher than what was initially predicted. Because of this, Bequette, Boon and Hoenig are holding off investing fresh money.

Bequette, who expected an 18-percent return, is now concerned he won't beat the 11 percent he had with his mutual funds. His guess is that as a new market, Prosper has attracted people who couldn't find loans anywhere else, thus driving up the default rate and hurting overall returns.

Hoenig says Prosper's interest-rate caps of 30 percent aren't high enough to compensate for the dangers of lending to high-risk borrowers.

To keep bad loans from poisoning the well, Prosper blocks borrowers who have defaulted on their loans. Over half the company's engineers work on antifraud measures, according to Witchel, and Prosper insures lenders against money lost due to identity theft. Working with federal law enforcement, the company had its first arrest a few months ago. "Criminal communities tend to chat about who is weak," says Larsen. "We think it is very important to put a line in the sand early on."

At the end of the day, as with all new markets, there is a learning curve for early adopters. "They key thing for us is not stepping in and saying what people should do, otherwise it is just what banks are doing at the end of the day," says Larsen.

五一休假结束

五一黄金周，去天津转了一圈，可惜也没有照几张像样的照片。
我那可怜的网络相册有一次被无情的荒废了。相机的快门按钮不好用了，还是凑合用吧，也问题不大。摄影包坏掉了，书包也坏掉了，有空去买个摄影背包，兼做书包好了 sigh

Timon去了趟美国，参加SIGCHI，人家多牛啊呵呵，还照了很多漂亮的照片。
唉，看来我还真是够颓的....算了不说这个了呵呵

这个五月应该还会过得不错吧，谁知道会怎样呢

一直无所事事，老大一直也不理俺们，俺们就这么安然的继续无所事事。

用Google AdWord来给Google AdSense做广告

偶然在Gmail里面看到这样一个Google AdWord

其中第二个链接会指向后面的那个网站。
显然是该网站投放的广告。而我们可以看到该网站的主要内容就是推荐使用Firefox，而其实际目的就是为了吸引留言用户，点击下载Firefox（其实那个下载link本身就是一个Google AdSense的广告)
这样，也就是一边付费给Google实现推广自己的网站，同时，自己的网站通过广告从Google那里获得收益。这件事可以说还是很有意思的。显然，这个买卖显然不会赔钱，网站商不是傻子。至于Google是否赔钱，这个是Google自己的事情了（主要是这个推广带有Google Toolbar的Firefox活动本身可以理解为Google自己投放的广告.....

另外，一个有意思的事情是。这个网站下面也使用了Google AdSense, 而且Google很聪明的认为这个Ad位置与这个网站注册的AdWord具有相当高的关联度，于是显示了这个网站本身的广告。也就是自己页面上的广告link到了这个页面本身。这件事就很有意思了，看起来，应该每个Click是对Google有利而让网站赔钱吧。总之，很有意思，值得研究，呵呵。

又到了本月结算的日子了
这个月过得还算节俭，整个财政预算有了将近30%的盈余部分。
记账还是有效果的，要坚持恩

日常餐饮一直保持了正常水平，这个预算的数值大概可以进行修改了。
由于没有大型bg行为，与朋友吃饭的部分有了大量的结余，也刚好填补了上个月的赤字。买书依然是一大块的收入以及持续的赤字，买了书不看的毛病要改改了，而且预算的相应部分可能会准备调整。
如上个月观察到的，娱乐的部分适当的有所增长算是好现象，而且，也趋于稳定。
其他部分基本处于高度不稳定状态....继续观察中

从结余和赤字情况看，日常餐饮需要进行修改，购买书籍的数值需要修正，对于特殊突发性事件，还不好处理...继续考虑中。总之，这个月还算不错啦，呼呼～～

关于北京的书店的一些评论

学校周边其实已经有非常好的购书全套解决方案

现在我最喜欢的集中式大型书店还是中关村图书大厦，地方大，书架安排的也比较合理。找东西比较舒服，平时人也不是非常多。另外就是计算机相关的图书相当的多，毕竟是地处中关村，是我见过计算机图书最全的大型书店。

第三极可以算是中关村图书大厦的一个备份吧，书摆放的很乱，相当的乱，因此我也说不好是不是第三极真的有比中关村图书大厦更多的书。总之，不是很习惯，但是毕竟距离都不愿，可以作为备份或无聊的时候逛。

不过，这两家大型书店的人文书籍并不是非常齐全
好在北大校内有几家小规模的书店（北大某个楼的地下一层）
里面有很多人文相关的读物，可以说一般的人文书籍在哪里都可以找到了。

另外，清华南门外的万圣书店五道口的光合作用书房都是很有意思的书店，书店不大，人文、经管之类的一些有意思的书可能去那里找比较合适，小资的书也适合去那里找。中关村图书大厦是工兵找书的地方........

商业街购书
西单图书大厦是北京最早的一家大型书店，高中的时候一致喜欢去哪里“穷文化”。不过，我只能说西单图书大厦曾经是北京最大的大型书店，而现在，书的数量以及场地都很受局促，而且位于商业街附近，人比较多，一般就是到西单的时候有空顺便去逛逛吧。

王府井新华书店位于北京王府井步行街南口，其光顾人数之多可想而知。同样，受限于面积问题，书的数量并不是很多，而且分类做的并不理想，有些书甚至不上架只是摆在拐角，或随意的找一个台子摆放实在是....

总之，这两家商业街附近的大型书店一般不会特意去买书，路过可以去看看吧。

另外，王府井往北有商务印书馆的书店以及三联书店，两家书店都以人文类书籍见长。商务印书馆书店里有丰富的人文学术资源，当然，汉译文学名著这里最全。三联书店则是涵盖了人文、小资、艺术等多方面书籍，值得一提的是，这里的科普书籍居然惊人的全，是我见到科普书籍最多的书店了（中关村图书大厦、西单图书大厦也还不错的）。
至于艺术类书籍，三联书店对面就是美术馆，美术馆边上就有一家专门买艺术类书籍的书店。当然，艺术类书籍贵啊.........

Gödel, Escher, Bach: an Eternal Golden Braid: A metaphorical fugue on minds and machines in the spirit of Lewis Carroll (commonly GEB) is a Pulitzer Prize-winning book by Douglas Hofstadter, published in 1979 by Basic Books. A new preface by Hofstadter accompanied a 20th anniversary re-edition (ISBN 0465026567), which was released in 1999.

At one level, it is a book about how the creative achievements of logician Kurt Gödel, artist M. C. Escher and composer Johann Sebastian Bach interweave. As the author states: "I realized that to me, Gödel and Escher and Bach were only shadows cast in different directions by some central solid essence. I tried to reconstruct the central object, and came up with this book."

The central theme of the book is more abstract. Hofstadter asks: "Do words and thoughts follow formal rules, or do they not?" In the preface to the twentieth-anniversary edition, Hofstadter laments that his book has been misperceived as a hodge-podge of neat things with no central theme. He stated: "GEB is a very personal attempt to say how it is that animate beings can come out of inanimate matter. What is a self, and how can a self come out of stuff that is as selfless as a stone or a puddle?"

With almost a thousand, often very highly cited publications, he is one of the most influential social scientists of the 20th century.

Simon was not only a polymath, but a truly innovative thinker. He was among the founding fathers of several of today's most important scientific domains, including Artificial Intelligence, information processing, decision-making, problem-solving, attention economics, organization theory, complex systems, and computer simulation of scientific discovery. He coined the terms bounded rationality and satisficing, and was the first to analyze the architecture of complexity and to propose a preferential attachment mechanism to explain power law distributions.

Simon's genius and influence is evidenced by the many top-level honors he received later in life. These include: the ACM's Turing Award for making "basic contributions to artificial intelligence, the psychology of human cognition, and list processing." 不能想想，假想一下Google在Baidu开个博客是啥样子......

我就不明白，为什么这帮人就不能自己弄台服务器，就不会架一个Open的Blog.....可以理解各种原因，包括受众也算是一个原因。

但是，不知道这算不算MSRA正式的抛弃MSN Space........实在是意见太让人可笑的事情.............

Companies may talk about embracing Web 2.0, but they're slow to invest in blogs, wikis, and many of the other new collaborative technologies that are generating headlines. Instead, they're putting their resources behind technologies that enable automation and networking, according to a Mar. 22 McKinsey Global Survey, "How businesses are using Web 2.0."

During January, 2007, 2,847 executives from global companies, 44% of whom were C-level or above, were asked to provide insight into which of nine Web 2.0 technologies they were currently investing in—and how their use of these technologies has evolved over the past five years.

Web services, including software that enables systems to communicate with each other, attracted the largest investments, with 80% of executives reporting that they use or plan to use them. These services might be used, for example, when a retailer and a supplier communicate over the Internet to automatically update each other's inventory systems. Collective intelligence, which attempts to tap the wisdom of crowds to make decisions, was the second-largest draw, with 48% of executives reporting investments. Peer-to-peer networking, a technique for efficiently sharing music, video, or text files, also attracted attention, with 47% of executives reporting investments.

Both Adobe and Microsoft are launching products that step right on each others’ turf today. Microsoft is launching Silverlight, a direct competitor to Adobe’s Flash. Meanwhile, Adobe is launching Adobe Media Player, a rival to Windows Media Player. This could be the hardest fought battle in the rich media space…well, ever.

Silverlight has been under development for more than two years. It’s a browser plugin for playing media files and interactive Web apps that works on Windows PCs and Macs with Firefox, IE and Safari. Partners include Brightcove, Limelight Networks, Netflix and Akamai. Silverlight provides DRM and the window can be resized thanks to the use of vectors. A pre-release version is available for download. Flash has a large installed base, and lots of traction after YouTube and other video sites made use of it. Microsoft, however, could reverse that trend by including Silverlight in automatic updates, pre-installing it on PCs and so on.

Adobe Media Player vs Windows Media Player

The Adobe Media Player, meanwhile, is a free desktop media player designed to take on Windows Media Player. Adobe is going in the other direction to Microsoft: trying to leverage its dominance of online video and interactive apps to kickstart uptake of the desktop app. Adobe Media Player lets you subscribe to content via RSS, and it’s the only major desktop media player that will support Flash. This too is cross platform (Windows and Mac), and features Flash DRM, a feature that the independent company Widevine announced last week. Providers will also be able to attach ads to content.

It seems to me that the ultimate winner in this battle will be the one to push the greatest number of users from one platform to another: from Windows to Silverlight, and from Flash to Adobe Media Player. Both companies seem to have a good shot at doing that, meaning that the ultimate victor is just too hard to call.

Google Inc. said Friday that it would purchase Internet services company DoubleClick Inc. for $3.1 billion, marking another big foray into the heart of the Web economy.

The price represents a stunning change in valuation for the company, given that it fetched $1.1 billion in 2005, and has since sold off parts of itself to other parties. Among others, Microsoft Corp., had been vying for control of New York-based DoubleClick, which is controlled by San Francisco private-equity firm Hellman & Friedman.

Even as the Internet economy enters its second decade, the price shows just how valuable important market positions can still be. In adding DoubleClick, Google pushes deeper into the business of placing, or "serving," the electronic advertisements that dot Web sites.

But it also complicates Google's already fraught relationships with Web publishers, who often rely on Google for advertising revenue and traffic, but worry that Google's ever-growing market power may somehow crimp their own growth plans.

This purchase requires a lot of thought. Will Google make the service free? Did it buy the service mainly for the data about display advertising - data it wants so it can drive efficiencies into that market? The price is way over the whisper number last week - did Google once again outbid its competition? Looks that way. The price is cash - not stock. Now Google has a major set of relationships with display advertisers.

But will they trust Google? My sources told me that Google was building its own, now it's clear it wanted the relationships which came via a market leader. And to force me to eat my post, which I will do Monday when I can get home to a printer (yum).

Tim O'Reilly: Web 2.0 Is About Controlling Data

It's not too late to get on the "web 2.0" bandwagon, says publishing magnate Tim O'Reilly, who coined the term. And if you're wondering what it takes to build a web 2.0 startup, O'Reilly has just the conference for you -- the Web 2.0 Expo.

O'Reilly Media and CMP are co-hosting the conference, which runs April 15 to 18 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.

Organizers expect between 7,000 and 10,000 people to check out the conference's 120 exhibitors and seven educational tracks, covering topics from the elementary (web 2.0 fundamentals) to the complex and critical (web operations). O'Reilly describes it as a "how-to conference for web 2.0 developers."

O'Reilly has been on many bloggers' lips during the past two weeks. The buzz at his recently-concluded ETech conference was about Kathy Sierra's abrupt cancellation of her speaking appearance there. Sierra cited anonymous death threats and harassment on her own blog's Comments section, as well as on two blogs created by Cluetrain author Chris Locke. In the ensuing debate, O'Reilly brokered a meeting between Sierra and Locke, and made a call for a "bloggers' code of conduct." He even proposed badges that bloggers could put on their sites to indicate whether they moderated comments heavily or not at all.

We spoke with O'Reilly this week to find out what's in store at the show, the current state of the much-hyped "web 2.0" terminology and his current thoughts on civility in the blogosphere.

Wired News: Can you tell us what's exciting about web 2.0 and what we can expect from the conference?

Tim O'Reilly: One of the big changes at the heart of web 2.0 is the shift from the creation of software artifacts, which is what the PC revolution was about, to the creation of software services. These are services that ultimately, if they are successful, will require competencies of operation, of scale, and the like.

I remember talking to people about this three or four years ago, and they (wanted to know) how many people need to scale services to the size of Google? Well, there are now hundreds of services as big as Google was back then.

Increasingly, with services like Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service) and EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud), we're starting to see the emergence of operations as a platform, as well as an internal competency. Amazon's been a real pioneer there.

WN: Are there any trends among the companies exhibiting at Web 2.0 Expo, the kinds of services and technologies being shown?

O'Reilly: Well, obviously this is a market with a lot of froth in it already. I have to say there are a lot of me-too products and companies. Yet another social network, of the 15th flavor -- that's common in every new technology revolution. There are imitators who have marginal improvements.

One of the companies that's going live on Monday is Spock, which is a people-search engine. It's really, really impressive. It's thinking about whether there are other classes of data to which search hasn't really been applied.

That goes back to a major theme of web 2.0 that people haven't yet tweaked to. It's really about data and who owns and controls, or gives the best access to, a class of data. Amazon is now the definitive source for data about whole sets of products -- fungible consumer products. EBay is the authoritative source for the secondary market of those products. Google is the authority for information about facts, but they're relatively undifferentiated.

Why did Google, for example, recently decide to offer free 411 service? I haven't talked to people at Google, but it's pretty clear to me why. It's because of speech recognition. It has nothing to do with 411 service, it has to do with getting a database of voices, so they don't have to license speech technology from Nuance or someone else. They want their own data stream.

WN: So you think that (control of data) is actually more characteristic of web 2.0 than social networking or Ajax (asynchronous JavaScript and XML) interfaces?

O'Reilly: Absolutely. Anybody who thinks that this is about Ajax is completely missing the boat.

I do think building rich internet applications is an important part of web 2.0. I don't want to dismiss it, because we are able to build richer application platforms today. But it's ultimately about network effects, and where do you build services that get better the more people use them? And it's also about the databases that get created as a result of those network effects.

As far as I'm concerned, web 2.0 is still in it's really early stages, and the reason is because the data isn't all owned yet.

The network-effects play is about how you get increasing returns by everybody using your stuff, which is really what Microsoft did on the PC. Here we see it again, where these are winner-takes-all games. The internet looks like an open platform in the beginning, but once somebody gets a lead, their service gets better fast enough, if they've harnessed all the right levers, until it becomes a real barrier to entry.

Why, despite many attempts, have we seen nobody able to dethrone eBay? Well, it's because there are network effects at work in auctions. You have a critical mass of buyers and sellers. We're seeing that with Google AdWords -- it's just a bigger and better marketplace. There are these tipping points where these services really become monopolistic.

We're still trying to move people toward really understanding what that new world looks like. I don't think a lot of people are there. A lot of people still think, "Oh, it's about social networking. It's about blogging. It's about wikis." I think it's about the data that's created by those mechanisms, and the businesses that that data will make possible.

WN: You've been blogging about civility and your bloggers' code of conduct. Do you expect that will be a topic of discussion at the conference? Or do you think it will change the tone of discussions there?

O'Reilly: Well, you know, people at a conference would not tolerate the kind of conversations that happen in the comment threads on many blogs. If somebody started standing up and shouting obscenities, you'd throw them out. My point is, most bloggers are way too tolerant of abusive behavior on their blogs.

I've come to think the call for a code of conduct was a bit misguided. A lot of sites have their own terms of service that are a lot like what I proposed for the code of conduct. And I was just saying, let's get the best of the breed, let's figure it out, so somebody who wants to have one of these doesn't have to think it all up for themselves.

People have interpreted that as a call for some kind of MPAA ratings system or something. That's not at all what I was proposing. I was proposing a modular set of terms of service, so somebody could say, "I don't want this kind of behavior." Now, a lot of people already do that, so it's really much ado about nothing.

The problem, as I've really wrestled with it, is that right now your options in terms of enforcing civility are pretty binary. You have the ability to delete someone's comments (on your own blog), or to let them stand.

There are some fairly sophisticated moderation systems out there. Of course, Slashdot is full of people who make terribly uncivil comments. But it's possible because they have a good moderation system, where good comments are voted up. You can set your moderation threshold, you can say, "I only want to see the good comments." So you're exposed to a hundred useful comments, and the 900 comments that have generally been considered drivel or that haven't been voted up, you don't even see them. If you want to read them all, though, more power to you.

Most blogging platforms don't have that kind of control. I want to get an attempt together to get some good moderation plugins on all the major blogging platforms, so people have other options than simply deleting.

The whole (code of conduct) was a reaction to Chris Locke's original statement, you know, "I didn't say that so I have no responsibility." And I'm going, "Wait a minute, yeah, you do. You're the manager of a site that was getting progressively nastier, and you let it happen." It really started with a reaction to this idea that a site owner can and should disclaim comments on their blog.

WN: He did take the blog down.

O'Reilly: Yeah, he did, but that's actually a terrible outcome, because now nobody knows what really was said. There's a lot of he said, she said, with a lot of people who were involved saying "Well, it wasn't really so bad, it wasn't really a misogynistic, nasty site, it was just funny." Well, how do we know? We can't see. It's gone.

WN: So would you put an "anything goes" button or badge on your own website?

O'Reilly: No, what I'd really like, and what I'm going to work for, is to get some better moderation mechanisms. One of the things Slashdot says is to focus on moderating up, not moderating down. Promote the good (comments), because they're often really useful, thought-provoking comments and you want those. If we can give people good mechanisms, that's probably actually better than promulgating any one policy.

Google 拼音盗用词库，谷歌面对挑战

前一段，Google推出谷歌拼音输入法。毕竟凭借google在国内的影响力，谷歌拼音瞬间在大江南北走红，并顺利的借助“盗用词库”这一事件，瞬间称为家喻户晓的知名时间。

毕竟Google的受众还是更多，毕竟我也是因为输入法挂上了Google的大名而试用，并推荐这个输入法。然而，Google似乎这一次误用了他的大名气，“盗用词库”几乎在发布的第一天就已经开始在网络上展开广泛讨论。

然而，让那些坚信Google不会Do Evil的Google Fans这一次可能要伤心了。Google中国正式承认输入法词库出现问题。这也让我们再一次想问，Google距离"不做恶(Don’t Be Evil)"有多远。还是Google的Evil距离True Evil有多远....

数与诗的后现代对话 ——前国立清华大学校长刘炯朗教授在微软亚洲研究院的演讲

你曾经在数学里品读出诗歌的意蕴么? 你曾经在诗歌中解读出数字的神秘么? 一个是科学王国的宝剑，一个是文学殿堂的瑰宝；一个张扬着理性的威严，一个释放着感性的激情。面对如此遥不可及的数与诗，你的确很难想象这两者之间的联系。前国立清华大学校长刘炯朗教授在前不久举行的“科技与人文”演讲系列中，趣味迭生地为我们揭开了“数里有诗，诗里有数”的奥秘。

数里有诗：诗歌是感性的数学
刘炯朗教授虽然满头银丝，但是跟年轻人一样，仍然对事物充满着新鲜的好奇，也正是源于这种对真妙的向往，让刘教授看出了数学背后的诗意。一开始，他用生活化的例子切入数学概念，在开场时就提出一个有趣问题：32块2*1大小的骨牌填充一块8*8格面积的棋盘，会有多少种可能？这就连古希腊数学家阿基米德也碰到类似疑惑——为14个不规则形状的图案寻找排出一个正方形的几种可能而大伤脑筋。

离散数学中的“列举”理论在刘炯朗教授的思维中竟然和古典诗词摩擦出火花。你曾经读过康熙的《一字诗》么？“一蓑一笠一扁舟，一丈竿头一只钩，一水一拍似一唱，一翁独钓一江秋”；你还曾读过徐志摩的《沪杭车中》么？“一卷烟，一片山，几点云影；一道水，一条桥，一支橹声；一林松，一丛竹，红叶纷纷 ”。这些诗人为我们“一一”点数出美好景致中的种种事物，这种细致的罗列与数学中的“列举”有了异曲同工之妙。

“落花人独立，微雨燕双飞”，刘教授饶有兴致地给我们吟起了唐代诗人翁宏的诗句，它充分体现了中国古典诗词的美：形式整饬且音韵和谐。对联句，更是一种体现对仗工整，平仄协调的独特艺术形式。对联的特点是既要有“对”，又要有“联”。形式上成双成对，彼此相“对”；上下文的内容相互照应，紧密联系。而大家耳熟能详的“对称”则是数学矩阵、等量等公理中的重要概念。点、线、面之间的对称组合，就如同平仄、词性、词义之间的对仗关系，丝丝入扣。接着，刘教授信手拈来另一个对联“上海自来水来自海上，中山归隐客隐归山中”，一下子把数学中的“对称”格式和诗歌中的“对仗”手法活灵活现地“对”起来了。

“如果你把“上海自来水来自海上，中山归隐客隐归山中”这上下联各自倒转回来念，会是怎样一个句子呢？”刘教授引导着场下的观众玩起了文字魔术。结果，当观众一个字一个字念过去的时候，发现自己竟被刘教授给“耍”了。上下联，不论是顺着念，还是逆着读，都依然是一模一样的那个句子。原来刘教授将“对称”法严格运用在了诗句的组织中，结果形成了语言艺术上的“回文”效果，这种回文修辞在英文中也常有发生，比如,”Able was I ere I saw Elba”等等。

从第一排骨牌的倒下，我们知道了其余多米诺骨牌的结局——那就是全部倒下。从“一叶知一秋”“一树一菩提”这些富有深意的诤言，我们知道了微小事物对大事件的通感和预知。数学上的感应，与诗歌中的感应，都让我们领略到了微观对宏观的折射力量。就像18世纪英国诗人威廉·布莱克在一首诗中所揭示的真理：”To see a world in a grain of sand, and a heaven in a wild flower, hold infinity in the palm of your hand, and eternity in an hour.” 这首诗的中文翻译或许很多人都熟悉：一花一世界，一沙一天国，君掌盛无边，刹那含永劫。刘教授在对这首诗境彻悟和感应的基础上，给出了自己的独到诠释：一沙窥尘世，一瓣证瑶台，双手持无量，刹那悟如来。

接着，刘教授又为观众演绎了数学中的递回公式与诗词“顶真格”的姻缘联系。递回公式中，序列的每一项被定义为前一项的函数，每相邻两项之间会存在重叠关系，如关系式dn=(n-1)dn-1+(n-1)dn-2. 这种上递下接的艺术特色在“顶真格”修辞中发挥得淋漓尽致。无论是白居易《长恨歌》中的“后宫佳丽三千人，三千宠爱在一身”，还是脍炙人口的“柳色青，柳色青青春满城，满城风雨烟光送，风雨烟光送远行，远行君向归山路……”，这些相似的美感诉求，让我们不由得感叹头尾蝉联的“顶真”句式原来与递回公式中的形式美是同此相通。

诗里有数：数学是理性的诗歌
“这次第，怎一个愁字了得”，李清照的这句经典名句，虽然哀婉幽怨，但是却激发了刘教授无穷的灵感，他想帮助女诗人解答出“愁”字到底值几许？刘教授引诗据典，给观众吟起来许多有关“愁”的诗句。“只恐双溪舴艋舟，载不动许多愁”——“愁”能载舟；“一斛明珠万斛愁，关山漂泊腰肢细”——“愁”能斛量；“与尔同消万古愁”——“愁”能亘古。刘炯朗教授用“列举”法证明了“愁”的份量完全可以用时间和空间来衡量。于是，折回到李清照的《声声慢》那“愁”字感发的源头——“梧桐更兼细雨，到黄昏，点点滴滴”——这愁绪的来处也能看得清清楚楚。刘教授在此灵机一动，因这了不得的“愁”字引申出了一个数学结论：2>1. 再看这首词的开头，“寻寻觅觅，冷冷清清，凄凄惨惨戚戚”，反复齐整的叠字运用，让人深切地感受到了其愁愫的深重，那份量远远超越于一个“愁”字。于是，从这一点上不难看出， 2>1的数学结论也同样成立。

刘教授玩味了李清照的词之后，仍然意犹未尽，于是继续挑起了辛弃疾的词玩起来了更有趣的文字游戏。《丑奴儿》有一句经典诗句“而今识尽愁滋味，欲说还休，欲说害羞，却道天凉好个秋”。从偏旁结构而言，“秋”与“愁”这两字，前者正好是后者的一半。同时，结合诗义而言，就很自然地得出了1/2<1的结论。如此发散的思维和绝妙的联想，也只有像刘炯朗教授这样学识渊博的通达之人才能加以融会贯通了。>

数与诗的对话

数学：我的任务就是在普遍结果与特殊问题之间，在一个概念和另一个看似毫无关联但是却有联系的概念之间“拉关系”。

诗歌：我的目的就是把月与花、春与秋这些实质的景物，和喜与悲、爱与恨、有序与无序等情绪心态之间“拉关系”，并编织成优美动人的诗篇。

刘教授在整场演讲中虽然运用了看似“无中生有”的方法，但是却向我们妙趣横生地揭示了数学与诗歌在“拉关系”中的美感。其实归根究底，数学家和诗人的追求是一样的，都是为了美，并将不相关的事物联系起来并使之和谐。著名数学家丘成桐曾经说过：“数学是一门很有意义、很重要的科学，它除了有应用性的方面，还有文学性的方面。文学的最高境界，是美的境界。而数学具有着诗歌的内在气质，达到一定境界后，我们也能体会和享受到数学之美。”

无论是形象思维，还是逻辑思维；无论是诗人眼中，还是数学家眼中，他们所关照的客观世界都是美好的，人类的精神世界也是美好的。美是数学与诗歌的共同标准，也是这场数与诗的对话中最高亢的音符。

Google今天推出了自己的中文拼音输入法

基于google强大的检索技术，将整个Internet作为训练样本。虽然这个idea已经被搜狗用过，并实现了搜狗输入法。但相信Google此举还是会改变中文输入法的市场格局了吧。

简单的测试，Google输入法尤其对一些网络常用词汇、常用人名等的识别效果尤其好。

比如最强的如 gongsui - 弓虽，还有大部分的人名字包括日文人名如著名声优演员等，动画名称以及动画人物名字也很多都有。一些外来词汇如：御宅、萝莉控、御姐、残念、怨念、素晴、素敌这样的词都能直接识别。著名的诗词句子可以整句输入。

总之，还是强烈推荐试用一下的。

When someone takes the trouble of modeling your building in 3D, you want to make sure they also implement a phototexture of your signage. The example seen here is of a Ross clothing store and a Best Buy near Denver, Colorado. You can see these buildings with Google Earth 4 by turning on the "3D Buildings" layer. These buildings are in the Google 3DWarehouse so they got picked up and put in the layer.

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Google Inc. has emerged with Microsoft Corp. as a contender to buy online advertising company DoubleClick Inc., according to a media report Monday.

The competition between Google and Microsoft is likely to drive up DoubleClick's price beyond $2 billion, The Wall Street Journal reported in ins online edition, citing unnamed people familiar with the situation. See Wall Street Journal story (subscription required).

DoubleClick acts as a middleman between advertisers and ad agencies and online publishers, according to the report. The New York company's Internet-based systems let advertisers deliver ads to Web sites and serve up ads for publishers when consumers view their Web pages, The Journal said.

Yahoo Inc. and Time Warner Inc.'s AOL online unit also have talked to DoubleClick which is majority-owned by San Francisco private-equity firm Hellman & Friedman though it is unclear whether AOL is still in the race, The Journal said.

The bidding is part of a bigger battle as four of the biggest Internet players vie for the lucrative business of brokering online advertisements, according to The Journal, and the contest reflects concern about the increasing power of Google. AOL, is one of DoubleClick's biggest customers and Time Warner's interest in DoubleClick is partly founded on protecting that relationship, The Journal said.

Google and Microsoft spokesmen declined comment, a Yahoo spokeswoman couldn't be reached and a spokeswoman for DoubleClick said she had no immediate comment, The Journal said.

From WSJ : Online advertising firm DoubleClick Inc. is exploring a sale, and is already in active talks with Microsoft Corp., among other potential suitors, according to people familiar with the matter.

Google does not take third party ad tags. That means that if you want to advertise on Google, you have to run your creative through Google. But a huge portion of the advertising world that Google is now going after - graphical CPM ads - runs through third party ad servers like DoubleClick.

Now, DoubleClick is for sale, the WSJ reports. Actually, I've heard it's been shopped since early last year, but anyway....Microsoft is seen as an interested suitor.

Google can't let this stand. It's a major risk to its business to force advertisers to change behavior - it needs a third party ad serving solution.

So it will, without a doubt, build one. More soon.

Creative Suit 3 is comming

Adobe has today fleshed out its release plans for the next version of Photoshop. As reported earlier there will be two versions made available when it begins shipping next month. The standard edition will be familiar to existing users whilst a second 'extended' release will be aimed at industries as diverse as medicine, architecture and 3D design which already use image manipulation packages but require specific tools and features not currently included in Photoshop. This split in the product line serves to extend Adobe's potential market whilst not forcing traditional users to adopt the new additions unless they choose to.

在下这是第一次完整的整个月记帐，当然我们可以看到这个月的支出是多么有趣，也可以看到预算制定的如此之差...当然，从所有数据表格文字的不专业也可以看出我似乎该看点财会的书....-,-

从全部支出可以看出,平时的饮食占用了不小的部分,一方面可以算算所谓的"恩格尔系数"，看来偶生活似乎还很滋润的。

由于3月份认识的同学生日很多，因此大量礼物的支出直接导致了Special event的大比重，后面也可以但到这方面的严重赤字（当然，其实我自己都不太了解是不是应该把这部分计入预算）
同样的，由于生日原因Dining with friends的比例也偏高。同样赤字严重。

Book的比例依然很大，Book始终占本人相当大的消费内容。而娱乐比重之小看来值得关注...

从预算执行的角度看。绿色的棒棒大多指向负方向。可怕的财政赤字。
前面已经分析过，由于生日密集导致了特殊餐饮以及礼物的支出远远超支，构成了本月财政赤字的主要原因。
图书和日常饮食并没有什么特殊的情况，因此表现出预算本身潜在的问题。

这样看来，下个月首先要继续观察Book以及Daily dining的情况，酌情修改实际预算。长时间观察特殊事件造成的消费影响。最后，要注意娱乐部分支出是否合理以及个人支出应作的相应调整..........

当然，最重要的就是，真的该学点基本会计学........-,-

Apollo, Adobe’s platform for Rich Internet Applications, will enter public alpha in the next few hours. Developers will no doubt be familiar with the name, since Adobe has generated some interest in the developer community for its ability to create rich apps for the desktop environment. It’s essentially a way to bring the web to the desktop - Ryan Stewart heralded the news of the launch today.

Hosting millions of images is expensive enough for the likes of Photobucket and ImageShack, but how about actually paying users for hosting images with you? Newcomer ImageReward wants to do exactly that - host your images for MySpace, Piczo and the rest, and pay you for the privilege (yup, it’s new, despite what the footer may say).

The site rewards users with points: 2 points every time someone views your image, and 20 points when you refer new users. These points can then be converted to cash. The crucial part: I can’t find how much money you get paid. Most likely, those points convert to $0.000001 or less. The other massive issue is that some of the images hosted here are clearly copyrighted - yup, they’ll pay you to infringe copyrights. Why not sue us now and get it over with?

This is the same problem that the likes of Metacafe have to look out for as payments are added to online video: paying users for copyrighted content they didn’t create is surely far more objectionable than just hosting it. There is, however, a great opportunity to combine image hosting and a payback for the content creator: I’m sure Photobucket will figure it out in time.

Google Real Estate beta

Danny Sullivan, of the Search Engine Watch, commented over at the Internet Stock Blog that this is really just Google Base integrated with Maps to produce a vertical search across real estate. He also blogged about this in more detail, and also gave this link which goes right to the real estate search in Google Base.

Shimon Sandler discovered that Google was testing a new real estate service when entering certain related search queries. An additional option allowed searching for house with parameters like location, price, bedrooms, bathrooms, etc. From there you can show the results via Google Maps with the listings on the left, with photos of the property if available. Since Shimon posted, it appears the beta is not available anymore, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Google is testing this on a few select data servers.

Zillow and Real Estate ABC might have something to be worried about, as well as some more traditional competitors in this space.

I know far too well how frustrating shopping for a house online can be. Services like realtor.com always lag behind the market, and you’ll find different pictures and info from the realtor sites, not to mention FSBO sites. Any competition in this space is very welcome, so that hopefully one day I can go to one site and see everything for sale and recently sold in the area, including all realtors and FSBO homes.

其实我个人对生日到是没有什么特别的感受。本来我就是一个对这种形式化的东西很不感冒的人（简单地说，就是我这个人很没意思）。生日年年过，也就逐渐的觉得没什么了。尤其是越来越大了以后吧。

The amount the market declined from peak to bottom: 508.32 points, 22.6%, or $500 billion lost in one day. The largest one-day percentage drop in history.

Synopsis: This was the crash that everyone expected but could not justify because of the work of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, which is the governing body President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered after the depression. The SEC - which was established for the prevention of further crashes and fraudulent practices that had infected the stock market - was doing a fine job after the war and finally coaxed tentative investors back into the market in the sixties.

The SEC, however, could take investors to the proper information but couldn't make them think. In the early '60s and '70s, investors looked not at the value of the company but at the appeal of its public image and the vernacular used to describe it. The following kinds of over-embellished company sketches would attract the public eye:

"Synergy Space-Bovubetribucs forges a new frontier in the introduction of organic entities into the ecosystem of the lunar-scape in order to promote greater synergy. This triumphant new paradigm will be enacted through a leveraged advantaged momentum initiator."

Even though these illustrations were vague, investors were infatuated with these companies, which somehow represented some higher idea. The SEC required companies to state explicitly that they had no assets or even a fighting chance at getting any, but investors continued to believe that the potential for these companies was limitless. This bullish attitude, despite frequent bumps and insolvencies, continued into the eighties when conglomerates and hostile takeovers were the golden children of a finance-hungry media. Under the math of the "new economy,"firms would grow exponentially rather than incrementally simply by picking up other companies,

The SEC was unable to halt the shady IPOs and conglomerations, so the market continued to rise unabated throughout the '80s. Even institutional investors and large mutual funds, increasing their dependency on program trading, began to adhere to the mantra, "if a stock isn't gaining big time, find one that is."

Then, in early 1987, there was a rash of SEC investigations into insider trading. For the most part, people were aware of the tendency of Wall Street to look out for itself, but the barrage of SEC investigations, rattled investors. By October, investors decided to move out of the crooked game and into the more stable environment offered by bonds or, in some cases, junk bonds.

As people began the mass exodus out of the market, the computer programs began to kick in. The programs put a stop loss on stocks and sent a sell order to DOT (designated order turnaround), the NYSE computer system. The instantaneous transmission of so many sell orders overwhelmed the printers for DOT and caused the whole market system to lag, leaving investors on every level (institutional to individual) effectively blind.

Herd-like panic set in and people started dumping stock in the dark without knowing what their losses were or whether their orders would execute fast enough to keep up with plummeting prices. The Dow plummeted 508.32 points (22.6%) and 500 billion dollars vaporized. Fortunately, the newbie chairman of the Fed, Alan Greenspan, was around to help fight off a depression by preventing the insolvency of commercial and investment banks. The market recovered, and some modest refinements were made, including a circuit breaker that cuts out trading programs if the market slides to a set level.

伟大的博弈华尔街金融帝国的崛起 [美]约翰·戈登中信出版社

介绍华尔街的发展历史。因为我不是学经济金融的，所以似乎并不能从这本书中学到太多知识。但这本书以历史的笔法描述了一个引人入胜的华尔街传奇故事，以华尔街为缩影看到了美国的金融历史，对于一个外行来说也是不错的一本书。想了解华尔街历史，美国金融历史的朋友可不能错过这本书。

Freakonomics 魔鬼经济学 [美]斯蒂芬·列维特广东经济出版社
这本书其实称不上是经济学，但其绝妙的思路绝对值的每一个人一看。对于任何一个喜欢研究问题的人，这本书对于你的研究思路都会有帮助，无论你是做任何方面的研究。纵使你不了解经济学，或者根本对研究问题没有兴趣，你也可以把这本书作为一本侦探小说来读，其思路之新颖，内容引人入胜，绝不亚于一本侦探小说。
我也是一口气把这本书看完的，内容不多，但绝对够精彩。

君主论马基雅维利
看这本书颇为“上当受骗”，虽然马氏著作以这本君主论为最著名，但这献谄之作由于意图问题，显得有点“先天发育不良”，于是乎，要是想全面理解马氏理论，必然再读《论李维》。当然，我是没有兴趣再读了。
如题所言，本书主要阐述了君主制国家中君主如何治理国家的一些问题和“实用”方法。而对于民主国家则并没有涉及，将在《论李维》中再行论述。
作为国家政治里程碑式的著作，关心国家政治的人不容错过。

人像摄影手册 [美]比尔·赫特尔
这本书写的很不错，内容很实用，能学到很多有用的知识。

摄影师的视觉感受 [美]莱斯利·施特勒贝尔
像所有讲艺术理论的书一样，看起来基本上都“太过理论”。像能实际领悟些什么还是需要实践中去理解了。总之，我看这类书的时候一般都没什么心得和收获，看来我根性太差，可悲可悲　恩

这可以说是我最快速读完的书之一，我上一本最快读完书的记录是在两天内读完阿加沙·克里斯蒂的小说《无人生还》。当然那本书由于中期就大概了解了故事内容而读的很潦草。

Dr. Raj Reddy is the Mozah Bint Nasser University Professor of Computer Science and Robotics in the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University. He began his academic career as an Assistant Professor at Stanford in 1966. He has been a member of the Carnegie Mellon faculty since 1969. He served as the founding Director of the Robotics Institute from 1979 to 1991 and the Dean of School of Computer Science from 1991 to 1999.

Dr. Reddy's research interests include the study of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. His current research interests include Million Book Digital Library Project; a Multifunction Information Appliance that can be used by the uneducated; Fiber To The Village Project; Mobile Autonomous Robots; and Learning by Doing.

He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. He was president of the American Association for Artificial Intelligence from 1987 to 89. Dr. Reddy was awarded the Legion of Honor by President Mitterand of France in 1984. He was awarded the ACM Turing Award in 1994, the Okawa Prize in 2004, the Honda Prize in 2005, and the Vannevar Bush Award in 2006. Google has vowed to take a tough line on copyright when it completes its $1.65bn (£875m) takeover of YouTube.

The video-sharing website's rapid growth has been partly down to the thousands of clips from old TV shows uploaded illegally by its users. But Google Europe vice-president Nikesh Arora told MPs his company would not tolerate copyright violations.

YouTube is thought to have escaped prosecution so far because it is a new business with little cash, MPs heard. Its policy is to take down copyrighted material when it is alerted by the owners, but it has been criticised for not being vigilant enough. It has also developed technology that will allow it to block copyrighted videos.

'Pot of money'
Nevertheless, some pundits are predicting Google, which is one of the world's richest companies, will be hit by a string of legal challenges as soon as YouTube the takeover goes through. Andrew Mclaughlin, Google's head of global public policy, told the Commons culture committee that if material infringed copyright on Google Video service, "we take it down". But he added: "I just can't say anything about YouTube since it's not our company."

The committee chairman John Whittingdale asked Mr Arora if Google had "put aside a very large pot of money to settle copyright infringement" when it took over YouTube. Mr Arora replied: "There is not a lot we can say about what we will do with YouTube because it is still in the process of due diligence and we haven't closed the acquisition." But he added: "We intend to uphold copyright. We believe it is very important as part the creative process.

"It's evident from our policy as part of Google Video, Google News or Google Books, and any acquisition in the future is not going to change Google's view on copyright."

Content deals
YouTube has signed content deals with entertainment giants CBS, Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, NBC and Warner Music Group.
The companies will allow YouTube to distribute approved copyrighted material in exchange for a share of advertising revenue. Copyright owners can then judge whether to allow the video to remain on the site, and take a share of the advertising or block it.
YouTube already limits clips to 10 minutes to keep users from uploading whole television episodes and films - but some users get round this by uploading them in instalments, the committee heard.

Bill Buxton is a Principal Researcher at Microsoft Research. Prior to joining Microsoft he was Principal of the Toronto-based design and consulting firm, Buxton Design. Bill is one of the pioneers in computer music and HCI. He has played an important role in the development of computer-based tools for music, film, industrial design, graphics and animation. As a researcher, he has had a long history with Xerox’ Palo Alto Research Center and the University of Toronto, where he is still an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science. He has also been a lecturer in the Department of Industrial Design at the Ontario College of Art and Design. eScience - A Transformed Scientific Method
Abstract

Jim has been working for the last decade to get all scientific data and literature online and cross-indexed. Progress has been astonishing, but the real changes will happen in the next decade. First, funding agencies are forcing peer-reviewed science literature into the public domain and peer-reviewed science literature is being maintained in new ways -- cross-indexed to the data that produced it. Scientific data have traditionally been hoarded by investigators (with notable exceptions). The forced electronic publication of scientific literature and data poses some deep technical questions, including just exactly how to read and understand it? How can we preserve it so that it will be readable in a century? Incidental to this, each intellectual discipline X is building an X-informatics and computational-X branch. It is those branches in collaboration with Computer Science that are faced with solving these issues. Jim has been pursuing these questions in Geography, Astronomy, and more recently in Bioinformatics.

Two important technical trends have emerged over the last decade. First, the Web continues to grow its size with a variety of new data and penetrates every aspect of our lives. A Brief History of Software Engineering
Abstract

We present a personal perspective on the Art of Programming, starting with its state around 1960 and following its development to the present. The term Software Engineering became known after a conference in 1968, when the difficulties and pitfalls of designing complex systems were frankly discussed. A search for solutions began, concentrated on better methodologies and tools. The most prominent were programming languages that reflected the procedural, modular, and finally, object-oriented styles. Software engineering is intimately tied to their emergence and improvement. Also of significance were efforts of systematizing, even automating, program documentation and testing. Ultimately, analytic verification and correctness proofs were to replace testing.More recently, the rapid growth of computing power has made it possible to apply computing to evermore complicated tasks. This trend dramatically increased the demands on software engineers. Programs and systems became complex and almost impossible to fully understand. However, the sinking cost and the abundance of computing resources inevitably reduced care for good design. Quality seemed too extravagant, and has become a loser in the race for profit. We should be concerned about the resulting deterioration in quality. Our limitations are no longer given by slow hardware, but by our own intellectual capability. Programming, after all, is NOT easy. From experience we know that most programs could be significantly improved, made more reliable, economical, comfortable to use. What can we do?

What is the most important idea in computer graphics? I propose it is the simple idea of a procedural representation of an image. This is in contrast to traditional physical representations of images using paints, inks, pigments, fresco, etc. Representing images procedurally allows us to create elaborate physical simulations of virtual worlds which has revolutionized movie-making.More important, it allows us to create representations of abstract concepts. Making abstract ideas concrete by making a picture is one of the joys of computing. In the future, I believe abstract image representations will be the major focus of computer graphics research and development.Finally, it allows us to use the computer to build powerful new types of graphics tools, systems and hardware, which, in this age of computer-mediated communication, have become an essential part of personal computer systems.

Hedonomics – a Branch of Ergonomics Enshrined in the USA Constitution

Happiness. The Founding Fathers advocated it. Most people pursue it. Ergonomists have embraced it and given their research a name – hedonomics.
Studying human motor control, perception and perceptual-motor relationships, as well as the cognitive capabilities and limitations of human beings, they discovered a vital role for happiness.
Barry H. Beith, founder and president of HumanCentric Technologies and of author of "Hedonomics: The Human Factors of Pleasure Gains Attention as World Grows More Complex," explained that finding a name for the specialty presented one of the first challenges. "Hedonomics" triumphed over "The Human Factors of Pleasure" and "Affective Human Factors" for its simplicity.
His paper, published in LocalTechWire.com, explains that hedonomics represents something of a departure for ergonomists, whose work generally focuses on factors associated with technology and work. The new specialty grew from research that shows modern life is growing ever more complex, and technology is increasing the stresses of our "on-demand" culture. Dr. Beith cites cellphones and computers as particular culprits. Add the stress associated with work, child-rearing, education, and financial security, he said, and it is clear to see that having fun and relaxing are vital.
Play and fun, two ingredients of happiness, have long been associated with stress relief – critical to health – so they have assumed new importance as a focus for research. Hedonomics emerges as a means of allowing ergonomists to design activities that optimize, maybe even maximize, our enjoyment of life.
"When we look at the things we do to "enjoy" life, whether it is skiing, hang-gliding, racing cars, bikes, planes, parachuting, playing video games, watching movies, playing sports, it is clear that technology is pervasive and growing more sophisticated all the time," Dr. Beith explained in his article. " ... we have throughout history put great energy, time, and attention into our toys, games, and pasttimes and must recognize that the human side of technology is just as pervasive and important in these things as in our work activities."
Hedonomics dovetails with traditional ergonomics in several areas. Fun can kill, according to Dr. Beith, and designs and solutions that lessen risk will always be important work for ergonomists. Another tie-in is the current effort to translate and adapt video-gaming controls and displays to the military need for unmanned vehicular technology for the military. He said adaptations of video-gaming skills are also being studied and transferred to medical application in which robotics and remote control are being used for telesurgical work.
The human factors associated with the pursuit of happiness are serious business for our health, effectiveness and safety, and are now enshrined in mainstream research as hedonomics.

在农历春节前夕，一个瘦高的身影徘徊在从纽约飞往北京的中国民航班机上。在归家的中国留学生和商人中间，雷姆•库哈斯只身一人，飞越北极寒冷的上空，前往遥远的东方古国。

2002年12月20曰，库哈斯领衔的荷兰大都会建筑事务所(OMA)在有KPF、SOM、伊东丰雄、多米尼克•佩罗等世界顶级建筑师和建筑事务所同场竞技的CCTV新总部大楼设计竞标中，成为最大的赢家。

更为出人意料的是，库哈斯的8号竞标方案是被专家评委会全票通过，一举胜出的。

专家评委的意见是：这是一个不卑不亢的方案，既有鲜明的个性，又无排他性。作为一个优美、有力的雕塑形象，它既能代表新北京的形象，又可以用建筑的语言表达电视媒体的重要性和文化性，其结构方案新颖、可实施，会推动中国高层建筑的结构体系、结构思想的创新。专家评委认为能实施这一方案，不仅能树立CCTV 的标志性形象，也将翻开中国建筑新的一页。

但是，早在CCTV新大楼开始竞标之初，关于这个项目的争论就在网上开始了①。随着竞标的进行，网上来自建筑界的批判和争论愈演愈烈，不亚于对国家大剧院的争议。争论的焦点集中在央视建造这一大楼的价值所在、库哈斯的经历、方案本身的评判：争论的范围已经超出了建筑学的范畴，扩展到文化、社会、经济各个领域。CCTV新大楼和库哈斯迅速成为2002年建筑界最火爆的关键词。

在网络上，库哈斯和他的CCTV方案成为中国建筑师操练批评利器再好不过的靶子： “不好看。俺就觉得像一大裤衩!!!” “为什么要选这个样子，像一个人折断了腿跪在地上，这样真不好……” “库的方案安全系数不高，建造能耗和运行能耗却很高。”

“库哈斯，这是个以制造建筑丑闻闻名于世的人。任何一个稍微具有美感的人都不难看清这个人的本质。”……

充满了谜团的库哈斯是怎样的一个人?

在西方建筑界，库哈斯是公认的有思想、有批判性的建筑师，是颠覆欧洲建筑传统的大师，是生活在名誉顶峰的明星。一位年轻的荷兰建筑师这样表示：库哈斯进入中国，对很多人来说，起到了旗舰的作用。能够参与一个项目，对他们来说，就是一种信心。

库哈斯又是一个充满了争议的人物，天生注定了要处于风暴中心。库哈斯的朋友说，库哈斯在大多数情况下处于被曲解、误读的状态。

下面的一个例子，可以说明库哈斯的方案被穿凿附会到了何种程度。网上披露库哈斯的创意采用了中国的“阴”和“阳”的寓意，建筑主体的空洞是“阴”、旁边直立的大楼是“阳”。当记者就此向CCTV新大楼设计方案的中国顾问吴朝晖求证时，他不禁哑然失笑。吴朝晖说：从来没有听说过库哈斯有这样的创意，这就是很简单的一件事情，怎么可能会有此联想?任何建筑都有虚和实，照此说来，都可以用阴阳来表示。

这个高过普通人一头的疯狂的荷兰人，有着超越常人的精力。《小、中、大、特大》的合作者、平面设计师毛说，以前做书的时候，和库哈斯天天泡在一起，但是现在见他一面都很困难，库哈斯的时间已经是以15min为一个单位来计算的。

库哈斯更有高过别人的智慧和思维。他喜欢以记者的眼光去观察事物，把好坏放在一边。他对都市现象研究有着强烈的爱好，对其中不定性的东西特别感兴趣。他的建筑论文，与其说是严格意义上的学术专著，不如说是激情洋溢、充满幻想的散文。

CCTV新大楼设计方案的另一位中国顾问朱亦民说：“库哈斯对建筑学最大的推动，是从纯形式的东西里拔出来，更接近于社会现实。”

与参加CCTV竞标的其他建筑师相比，库哈斯对中国的了解无疑是最多的，也是最像中国人的。库哈斯曾经在珠江三角洲的各个城市深入了解中国建筑的基本状况。库哈斯具有惊人的洞察力和出色的公关能力，能够读懂业主的诉求。库哈斯对中国的认识非常清楚，他对亚洲、对中国不抱有太多的幻想。库哈斯曾经说过，以中国现在的建设模式走下去，总有一天要后悔的。他知道在中国的项目做到最后是什么结果，因为泡沫太多了。

与此同时，库哈斯以极其认真的态度对任务书加以研究，他的阅读特别仔细。任务书上规定要有一个公园，要有绿化带。库哈斯就会反复问：为什么需要公园，为什么需要绿化带?即使是常识性的东西，他也会问得非常仔细。对于库哈斯来说，任何一个简单的事情，都不是简单的存在。

CCTV新大楼的造型，作为实施方案在最初就被确定下来了。CCTV的任务书上有四大块功能。库哈斯和他的同事的讨论一开始就集中在功能研究上。他们采用制表的方法将之直接具体化和视觉化，发现四个功能联在一起可形成一个环，成为一个整体，就像一个莫比乌斯圈，从而确立了CCTV新大楼的基本造型。此时是 2002年5月。

当水晶石公司将按照库哈斯的要求制作完成的效果图传送到荷兰OMA总部的时候，库哈斯按捺不住心中的兴奋和喜悦之情，将其中的一幅钉在墙上，反复欣赏了很久，嘴里念叨着：这就是中国制作的效果图。

2002年7月18日～21日，对于库哈斯来说，是决定性的几天。库哈斯在评审现场以三维动画进行演示，画面上CCTV新总部大楼气势非凡、极具张力的造型，给评委和业主留下了极其深刻的印象。

12月20日中标之后，踌躇满志的库哈斯和他的同事们一起开了香槟庆祝。在痛饮的同时，也对公司未来几年业务作了调整。

初春的东三环中路32号还是一片寂静，已经动迁一空的厂房即将被拆除。备受关注和争议的CCTV新总部大楼从2003年10月动工之后，将逐渐化为现实。

CCTV需要在2008年有一个具有足够吸引力的形象。强调密度、着眼于对城市密度关注的库哈斯需要一个具有真正挑战意义的项目。

于是，CCTV新大楼成为库哈斯最新的诠释和解答。口

For the mobile industry, waiting for people to use the net via their phone has been like waiting for a bus that never comes.

Even though a huge number of mobile phones in use can access the internet, and after the launch of faster third-generation (3G) data services, only 10% of Europeans actually use their handsets to go online.

The situation is the same in almost every other nation apart from Japan and Korea where faster mobile networks are much more common.

The slow take up has been blamed on the restrictions phone firms place on net access, confusion over cost, awkward page layouts and slow browsing speeds.

To make matters worse, 3G handsets have been clunky rather than funky.

"It's like picking a girlfriend or boyfriend. The first and most important decision for people is 'what does it look like?'" said Robert Rawlinson of Mobileshop.com.

He added that phones were now "fashion items" and 3G handsets were lacking the features, such as snap-on cases, common in many 2.5G mobiles.

Custom content

The networks are starting to tackle these problems and smaller handsets are starting to crop up. They are also starting to tailor content more specifically for mobile phones and get familiar web-names onto handsets.

Major TV broadcasters go mobile

Operators are also starting to dismantle their walled gardens and are giving customers greater freedom to roam the net via their handset. Before now many have limited customers to a few select sites.

"Operators who adopt a walled-garden approach are actually missing the point," said Stuart Jackson of Orange World. "It's not about the content that you can give to the customer, it's about the content the customer wants to access,"

"There's a myriad of content out there and we should be encouraging people to go onto the mobile web, explore it, and find that content that they want to see."

Mobile viewing

A broader industry initiative should make the whole process of going online a far more pleasant experience. From next month anyone will be able to register a .mobi net address. This domain is meant solely for sites that will be navigable by phones and anyone signing up must ensure their site meets a strict set of accessibility standards

More subtle trends in the way that people use technology may also boost the use of the net on phones. For instance, it is now possible to buy a phone that automatically sets up and sends pictures to a photo blog.

Hit video-sharing site YouTube has a dedicated mobile phone portal that allows users in the US to upload clips while they are on the move.

Speed demons

Operators are also tackling the biggest bar to greater net use - connection speed. In the home many net users enjoy speeds in excess of 1mbps. By comparison the 300kbps speed of 3G is glacially slow.

One technology that could boost mobile surfing speeds is the formidably named High-Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA). Operators across the world are adopting the technology quickly.

In the UK T-Mobile was the first to launch a HSDPA service.

HSDPA uses a technology called extended codes, and the point of that is that it gives you a lot more data, but it also means it's very vulnerable to interference

Paul Sludden from T-Mobile said: "With HSDPA the testing that we've undertaken on the live network we've found we can achieve up to four times the speed of 3G. That's quite a significant improvement, and an enhancement for the customer."

During a test conducted by Click it took 30 minutes to find a stable signal. Once this hurdle was overcome the test showed that the BBC homepage loaded about four times faster than on a standard 3G phone.

Unfortunately phones do not, yet, show when they are locked on to a strong HSDPA signal which could prove frustrating for mobile users.

"And I think that whole behaviour with consumers, which is becoming ever more internet-centric, is going to make people realise that it's a bit of a pain not being able to access the internet while I'm moving around."

I have visited a lot of sites like CSS Zen Garden and others, I keep exploring the web on daily basis, so this article covers most of the current design trends which I recognize as high-quality ones.

Anyway, I’ll be brief and will try to get right to the point.

Web Desktop Style

This is the most refined style with attempt to get close to graphics rich desktop look-and-feel as close as possible. As a result, that kind of style looks nice, but requires a lot of work and, usually, consumes lots of traffic.
In brief, Desktop Style can be distinguished by gradients all around, rich graphics, shadows and other imitation of desktop applications.

Examples of distinctive Web Desktop elements:

Blocks. Usually, it is an area of screen with a border, a header and a footer, to aggregate logically connected elements: links, text, a score card, an article preview. Blocks may come with optional shadow.

Miniblocks are blocks in blocks: usually they have mini-picture with tiny text.

Buttons. These web design elements come with gradient, contrast borders, optional shadow. Buttons may have “glass” effect, having reflections from underneath light. Usually buttons react on “mouseover” events (do some visual effect, when user moves mouse over the button).

Tabs. They also use gradient, contrast borders, optional shadow. They react to “mouseover” event.

A little bit simpler look-and-feel, with a good balance between style and a light-weight composition. Silver Orange style of web design is more concentrated on usability, than on a rich looking interface.

Expensive, requires a lot of work. Distinctive, so it’s extremely hard to seem original, doing web design in Apple Style, almost impossible.

Apple Menu. Apple menu is a central point of Apple web design style. Everything else has pretty much the same style: glass buttons, gradients, rounded blocks…

The main thing, which makes a site being in Microsoft Style is a gray, plain navigation panel on the left column with floating menus. Simple, clean and way too generic.

Microsoft Menu. The main menu of Microsoft web design style is gray, functional and simple. Borders, “mouseover” events processing, floating sub-menus… Usually it occupies left column.

One more distinctive thing of Microsoft web design style is gradient in header condensing from left to right with search form on the top-right corner.

All blocks are divided by clean gray lines. I think, it a plus from usability point of view. People may have wide range of opinions on Microsoft way of doing business, but one thing is for sure: Microsoft design style is simple, functional and it has good usability.

Comparing to Apple style, it’s not so rich or luxury. But it works.

This article is not…

This is not even an attempt to come up with a complete description of current web design styles; I’ve just put things (which I personally like) together and explained distinctive features of them.

Many other web design styles (especially from so called “Art Design” category) are left unexplained. Not because of I find them useless or not pretty, but mostly for usability reasons. You cannot use piece of art in everyday life. You are not suppose to.

I also haven’t highlighted styles, which I didn’t find attractive for lots of reasons: from their usability to aesthetics.

Color blindness, or color vision deficiency, in humans is the inability to perceive differences between some or all colors that other people can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but may also occur because of eye, nerve, or brain damage, or due to exposure to certain chemicals. The English chemist John Dalton in 1794 published the first scientific paper on the subject, "Extraordinary facts relating to the vision of colours", ^[1] after the realization of his own color blindness; because of Dalton's work, the condition is sometimes called Daltonism, although this term is now used for a type of color blindness called deuteranopia.

Color blindness is usually classed as a disability; however, in select situations color blind people may have advantages over people with normal color vision. There is anecdotal evidence that color blind individuals are better at penetrating color camouflage and at least one scientific study (Morgan, Adams and Mollon, 1992) confirms this under controlled conditions. Monochromats may have a minor advantage in dark vision, but only in the first five minutes of dark adaptation.

This is a sample image. The pictures below should look similar to people with normal vision (containing numbers, in this case 83), but some of them will not be visible to people with a color vision deficiency. The contrast in these tests is much subtler than commonly seen in other similar tests.

Prevalence

Color blindness affects a significant number of people, although exact proportions vary among groups. In Australia, for example, it occurs in about 8 percent of males and only about 0.4 percent of females[1]. Isolated communities with a restricted gene pool sometimes produce high proportions of color blindness, including the less usual types. Examples include rural Finland, Hungary, and some of the Scottish islands. In the United States, about 10 million men, which is about 7 percent of the male population and about 0.4 percent of the female population either cannot distinguish red from green, or see red and green differently (2006, Howard Hughes Medical Institute). It has been found that more than 95 percent of all variations in human color vision involve the red and green receptors in male eyes. It is very rare for males or females to be "blind" to the blue end of the spectrum.

Causes of color blindness

There are many types of color blindness. The most common variety are hereditary (genetic) photoreceptor disorders, but it is also possible to acquire color blindness through damage to the retina, optic nerve, or higher brain areas. Higher brain areas implicated in color processing include the parvocellular pathway of the lateral geniculate nucleus of the thalamus, and visual area V4 of the visual cortex. Acquired color blindness is generally unlike the more typical genetic disorders. For example, it is possible to acquire color blindness only in a portion of the visual field but maintain normal color vision elsewhere. Some forms of acquired color blindness are reversible. Transient color blindness also occurs (very rarely) in the aura of some migraine sufferers.

The normal human retina contains two kinds of light sensitive cells: the rod cells (active in low light) and the cone cells (active in normal daylight). Normally, there are three kinds of cones, each containing a different pigment. The cones are activated when the pigments absorb light. The absorption spectra of the pigments differ; one is maximally sensitive to short wavelengths, one to medium wavelengths, and the third to long wavelengths (their peak sensitivities are in the blue, yellowish-green, and yellow regions of the spectrum, respectively). It is important to realize that the absorption spectra of all three systems cover much of the visible spectrum, so it is incorrect to refer to them as "blue", "green" and "red" receptors, especially because the "red" receptor actually has its peak sensitivity in the yellow. The sensitivity of normal color vision actually depends on the overlap between the absorption spectra of the three systems: different colors are recognized when the different types of cone are stimulated to different extents. For example, red light stimulates the long wavelength cones much more than either of the others, but the gradual change in hue seen as wavelength reduces is the result of the other two cone systems being increasingly stimulated as well.

The different kinds of color blindness result from one or more of the different cone systems either not functioning at all, or functioning in an unusual way. When one cone system is compromised, dichromacy results. The most frequent forms of human color blindness result from problems with either the middle or long wavelength sensitive cone systems, and involve difficulties in discriminating reds, yellows, and greens from one another. They are collectively referred to as "red-green color blindness", though the term is an over-simplification and somewhat misleading. Other forms of color blindness are much rarer. They include problems in discriminating blues from yellows, and the rarest forms of all, complete color blindness or monochromacy, where one cannot distinguish any color from grey, as in a black-and-white movie or photograph.

Red-green color blindness

There are several types of red-green color blindness:

Protanopia: Lacking the long-wavelength sensitive retinal cones, those with this condition are unable to distinguish between colors in the green-yellow-red section of the spectrum. They have a neutral point at a wavelength of 492 nm—that is, they cannot discriminate light of this wavelength from white. Their sensitivity to light in the orange and red part of the spectrum is also reduced. Very few people have been found who have one normal eye and one protanopic eye. These unilateral dichromats report that with only their protanopic eye open, they see wavelengths below the neutral point as blue and those above it as yellow. This is a rare form of color blindness.
Deuteranopia: Lacking the medium-wavelength cones, those affected are again unable to distinguish between colors in the green-yellow-red section of the spectrum. Their neutral point is at a slightly longer wavelength, 498 nm. This is one of the rarer forms of colorblindness making up about 1% of the male population, also known as Daltonism after John Dalton. (Dalton's diagnosis was confirmed as deuteranopia in 1995, some 150 years after his death, by DNA analysis of his preserved eyeball.) Deuteranopic unilateral dichromats report that with only their deuteranopic eye open, they see wavelengths below the neutral point as blue and those above it as yellow.
Protanomaly: Having a mutated form of the long-wavelength pigment, whose peak sensitivity is at a shorter wavelength than in the normal retina, protanomalous individuals are less sensitive to red light than normal. This means that they are less able to discriminate colors, and they do not see mixed lights as having the same colors as normal observers. They also suffer from a darkening of the red end of the spectrum. This causes reds to reduce in intensity to the point where they can be mistaken for black. Protanomaly is a fairly rare form of color blindness, making up about 1% of the male population.
Deuteranomaly: Having a mutated form of the medium-wavelength pigment. The medium-wavelength pigment is shifted towards the red end of the spectrum resulting in a reduction in sensitivity to the green area of the spectrum. Unlike protanomaly the intensity of colors is unchanged. This is the most common form of color blindness, making up about 6% of the male population.

Dichromacy and anomalous trichromacy

Protanopes and deuteranopes are dichromats; that is, they can match any color they see with some mixture of just two spectral lights (whereas normally humans are trichromats and require three lights). Those with protanomaly or deuteranomaly are trichromats, but the color matches they make differ from the normal: In order to match a given spectral yellow light, protanomalous observers need more red light in a red/green mixture than a normal observer, and deuteranomalous observers need more green. They are called anomalous trichromats.

Protanomaly and deuteranomaly can be readily observed using an instrument called an anomaloscope, which mixes spectral red and green lights in variable proportions, for comparison with a fixed spectral yellow. If this is done in front of a large audience of men, as the proportion of red is increased from a low value, first a small proportion of people will declare a match, while most of the audience sees the mixed light as greenish. These are the deuteranomalous observers. Next, as more red is added the majority will say that a match has been achieved. Finally, as yet more red is added, the remaining, protanomalous, observers will declare a match at a point where everyone else is seeing the mixed light as definitely reddish.

Genetics of red-green color blindness

Genetic red-green color blindness affects men much more often than women, because the genes for the red and green color receptors are located on the X chromosome, of which men have only one and women have two. Such a trait is called sex-linked. Genetic females (46, XX) are red-green color blind only if both their X chromosomes are defective with a similar deficiency, whereas genetic males (46, XY) are color blind if their only X chromosome is defective.

The gene for red-green color blindness is transmitted from a color blind male to all his daughters who are heterozygote carriers and are perceptually unaffected. In turn, a carrier woman passes on a mutated X chromosome region to only half her male offspring. The sons of an affected male will not inherit the trait, since they receive his Y chromosome and not his (defective) X chromosome.

Because one X chromosome is inactivated at random in each cell during a woman's development, it is possible for her to have four different cone types, as when a carrier of protanomaly has a child with a deuteranomalic man. Denoting the normal vision alleles by P and D and the anomalous by p and d, the carrier is PD pD and the man is Pd. The daughter is either PD Pd or pD Pd. Suppose she is pD Pd. Each cell in her body expressses either her mother's chromosome pD or her father's Pd. Thus her red-green sensing will involve both the normal and the anomalous pigments for both colors. Such women are tetrachromats, since they require a mixture of four spectral lights to match an arbitrary light.

Blue-yellow color blindness

Color blindness involving the inactivation of the short-wavelength sensitive cone system (whose absorption spectrum peaks in the bluish-violet) is called tritanopia or, loosely, blue-yellow color blindness. Mutation of the short-wavelength sensitive cones is called tritanomaly. Tritanopia is equally distributed among males and females. Dr. Jeremy H. Nathans (with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute) proved that the gene coding for the blue receptor lies on chromosome 7, which is shared equally by men and women. Therefore it is not sex-linked. This gene does not have any neighbor whose DNA sequence is similar. Blue color blindness is caused by a simple mutation in this gene (2006, Howard Hughes Medical Institute).

Monochromacy

Complete inability to distinguish any colors is called monochromacy. It occurs in three forms:

cone monochromacy, where only a single cone system appears to be functioning, so that no colors can be distinguished, but vision is otherwise more or less normal.
achromatopsia or rod monochromacy, where the retina contains no cone cells, so that in addition to the absence of color discrimination, vision in lights of normal intensity is difficult. While normally rare, achromatopsia is very common on the island of Pingelap, a part of the Pohnpei state, Federated States of Micronesia, where it is called maskun: about 1/12 of the population there has it. The island was devastated by a storm in the 18th century, and one of the few male survivors carried a gene for achromatopsia; the population is now several thousand, of whom about 30% carry this gene.
Color agnosia or "central achromatopsia", where the person cannot perceive colors, even though the eyes are capable of distinguishing them. Some sources do not consider this to be true color blindness, because the failure is of perception, not of vision. It is a form of visual agnosia.

Diagnosis

The Ishihara color test, which consists of a series of pictures of colored spots, is the test most often used to diagnose red-green color deficiencies. A figure (usually one or more Arabic digits) is embedded in the picture as a number of spots in a slightly different color, and can be seen with normal color vision, but not with a particular color defect. The full set of tests has a variety of figure/background color combinations, and enable diagnosis of which particular visual defect is present. The anomaloscope, described above, is also used in diagnosing anomalous trichromacy.

However, the Ishihara color test is criticized for containing only numerals and thus not being useful for young children, who have not yet learned to use numerals. It is often stated that it is important to identify these problems as soon as possible and explain them to the children to prevent possible problems and psychological traumas. For this reason, alternative color vision tests were developed using only symbols (square, circle, car).

Most clinical tests are designed to be fast, simple, and effective at identifying broad categories of color blindness. In academic studies of color blindness, on the other hand, there is more interest in developing flexible tests ([2], for example) to collect thorough datasets, identify copunctal points, and measure just noticeable differences.

Treatment and management

There is generally no treatment to cure color deficiencies, however, certain types of tinted filters and contact lenses may help an individual to distinguish different colors better. Additionally, software has been developed to assist those with visual color difficulties.

Design implications of color blindness

Color codes present particular problems for color blind people as they are often difficult or impossible for color blind people to understand.

Good graphic design avoids using color coding or color contrasts alone to express information, as this not only helps color blind people, but also aids understanding by normally sighted people. The use of Cascading Style Sheets on the world wide web allows pages to be given an alternative color scheme for color-blind readers. This color scheme generator helps a graphic designer see color schemes as seen by eight types of color blindness. It is sometimes claimed that in extreme emergencies everyone is color blind. When the need to process visual information as rapidly as possible arises, for example in a train or aircraft crash, the visual system may operate only in shades of grey, with the extra information load in adding color being dropped. This is an important possibility to consider when designing, for example, emergency brake handles or emergency phones.

Misconceptions and compensations

Color blindness is not the swapping of colors in the observer's eyes. Grass is never red, stop signs are never green. The color impaired do not learn to call red "green" and vice versa. However, dichromats often confuse red and green items. For example, they find it difficult to distinguish a Granny Smith from a Braeburn or the red and green of a traffic light without other cues (for example, shape or location). This is demonstrated nicely in this simulation of the two types of apple as viewed by a trichromat or by a dichromat.

Color blindness almost never means complete monochromatism. In almost all cases, color blind people retain blue-yellow discrimination, and most color blind individuals are anomalous trichromats rather than complete dichromats. In practise this means that they often retain a limited discrimination along the red-green axis of color space although their ability to separate colors in this dimension is severely reduced.

2004年6月MBA学习期间，他开始了第四次创业——创办中国讲座网。为了筹集启动资金，他将自己的房子卖了，还创建了一个创业基金在复旦 MBA同学中进行筹资。中国讲座网是一个B2C类的教育网站，以视频点播（VOD）的方式提供著名大学的精品讲座、电视人物访谈和名人演讲。网站以宽带视频网站为平台，提供促销、费用支付和客户服务。如今，中国讲座网拥有注册用户4万多人，每天访问量超过10万，已成为中国最大的在线讲座网站。

谈及创办中国讲座网的初衷，胡安军提到了他在复旦大学的经历。学习期间，他迷上了复旦大学每年举办的数以千计的讲座，也经常看到许多人由于场地的限制而遗憾的被拒于讲座之外，由此便萌生了创造一个平台让更多的人听到讲座的想法。自建立以来，中国讲座网先后同中央电视台、上海文广传媒集团、凤凰卫视、北京大学、复旦大学和多家知名培训机构建立起合作关系，有效地收集、整理、分类并传播数以万计的讲座。

“试想一下，数以亿计的网民，不分种族和地域，不分高贵和贫贱，都将分享到这顿永不落幕的知识盛宴。这就是我们眼中的讲座市场，这就是中国讲座网不远的未来。”胡安军说。

　　充满激情的清华Coolbar 团队

与胡安军相比，另外一支队伍似乎少了创业时候的艰难。Coolbar团队于2006年2月正式组建，团队成员都是第一次创业，他们是清华大学最优秀的一群学生，具有不同的专业背景。CEO高皓和VP周昕在全球最大的咨询公司麦肯锡实习；VP曹磊有德意志银行、巴黎银行等顶尖投资银行的实习经验；CFO陈晓颖在一家领先的美资私人股权基金实习，拥有GE财务管理实习生经历；CTO崔靖宇是清华大学特等奖学金获得者，这是清华在校学生获得的最高荣誉；技术主管董悦是清华与微软联合培养的博士生，导师为微软亚洲研究院院长沈向阳。可以肯定这些清华学子们即使不创业也一定会成为杰出的职业精英，然而，成为一个企业家的执着梦想却使他们选择了这条梦想与汗水辉映、激情与挫折交织的创业征程。

他们使用二维条形码识别技术，通过现有的无线传播渠道，向数以百万计的手机用户发送视频短片——从而使消费者能通过他们的手机浏览企业的广告信息并可直接登录到企业的相关网站。CoolBar团队提供了一种全新的广告渠道，比传统媒体更具效率。

“CoolBar提供一种全新的广告媒介来提高效率及消费体验。这种方式令人振奋。”CoolBar 团队队长高皓对于自己的业务及创意服务信心满满，对于日益临近的第二届中国商业计划书大赛的最终决赛也做好了充分的准备。

　　来自中科院的专家团队

进入决赛的另一支队伍——北京艾视科技有限公司致力于基于互联网的视频会议和流媒体技术的开发，艾视团队的每个成员都堪称业内著名专家，其核心成员是来自中国科学院的教授、研究员以及硕士，同时还包括来自Google的资深工程师和留美硕士。团队主要从事互联网视频会议软件和设备、IPTV、企业即时通信系统、下载系统和下载服务等产品的开发和销售。

“视频会议市场巨大，全世界每年大约有几千亿人民币的市场。我们长期从事这个领域的开发，掌握了该领域的核心技术，并即将拥有一些专利，在该领域具有明显的优势，因此容易获得成功，并获得快速发展。”公司产品的主要开发提供者赖丁宙认为团队的核心竞争优势源于团队雄厚的技术能力。“我们希望通过参加此次商业计划书大赛，提高产品的知名度和美誉度，为我们进军国际市场提供一个有利的环境。我们相信参加此次大赛的经历将是我们一笔宝贵的财富。”

JBI嘉午生物识别科技有限公司成立于2006年，是一家致力于发展生物识别产品的公司，其产品在政府、商业、公共安全等各个领域均有广泛的应用。

JBI团队一共6人，其中3人具有美国留学背景，另外3人也都是硕士和博士。既熟悉国内市场，又掌握国际先进的管理经验及技术，这是JBI团队的竞争优势之一。JBI参加本次大赛的另一个特殊原因是：“我们团队的核心成员毕业于史密斯商学院，”蔡先生说：“我们了解学院的实力，对学院怀有特殊的感情。我们希望借助母校的声望提升公司的知名度，同时也希望借此获得风险投资的青睐。”

The secret to publish a SIGGRAPH paper

You are making this harder than it needs to be. There is one simple secret to
getting in to the papers program, and that is to pick a topic that no one has
interested in, and then make a really polished paper and video about it.

Here is a practical step-by-step formula for easy paper acceptance:

1. Scan CVPR, ECCV/ICCV, or NIPS for the algorithms they use. Pick one that
the SIGGRAPH audience has not heard of yet. This is not too difficult, CVPR
is huge.

2. (This is the creative step)
INVENT A “CUTE PROBLEM” THAT IS HAS NO PRACTICAL VALUE. It does not even need
to be a problem in graphics. But if you choose an area in graphics that has
possible practical value, the reviewers will kill it in a second. We’re smart
and can easily detect any true relevance, and we want to save those problems
for ourself.

Example: do texture synthesis on some sort of spline or manifold that is
little used. Apply someone’s vision segmentation code to make a system that
would allow even your grandmother to make a video of a virtual fishtank from
clips downloaded from the web. Build a clever device for capturing the BRDF
of some phenomenon that is of little interest.

I’m not going to give you any better examples, because I have to admit that
this step is not trivial. But by definition it is not as difficult as getting
a relevant paper accepted to SIGGRAPH, since that is impossible.

3. Download the Matlab code from the identified CVPR or NIPS papers.

4. Add a scale parameter. Now you have an innovative new algorithm.

5. Apply it to the bunny and the dragon.

6. Put ATTITUDE into the video narration. The tone of voice in the video
should convey how both clever you were to download that Matlab code, and how
effortless it was. Make it seem so simple that anyone can do it, yet so
clever that only a SIGGRAPH author could have thought of it.

I have had papers rejected, and one accepted. Trust me, it does work.

Fastest supercomputer to be built

Currently, BlueGene/L is the most powerful computer in the world

Computer giant IBM will build the world’s most powerful supercomputer at a US government laboratory.

The machine, codenamed Roadrunner, could be four times more potent than the current fastest machine, BlueGene/L, also built by IBM.

The new computer is a “hybrid” design, using both conventional supercomputer processors and the new “cell” chip designed for Sony’s PlayStation 3.

Roadrunner will be installed at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico.

The laboratory is owned by the US Department of Energy (DOE). Eventually the machine could be used for a programme that ensures the US nuclear weapons stockpile remains safe and reliable, the DOE said in a statement.

Using supercomputers to simulate how nuclear materials age negates arguments for the resumption of underground nuclear testing.

Peak speeds

The new machine will be able to achieve “petaflop speeds,” said IBM. One petaflop is the equivalent of 1,000 trillion calculations per second.

Running at peak speed, it will be able to crunch through 1.6 thousand trillion calculations per second.

By comparison, BlueGene/L is capable of mere “teraflop” (trillion calculations per second) speeds.

Installed at the DOE’s Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California and also used for the DOE’s Stockpile Stewardship Program, it has achieved 280.6 teraflops and is theoretically capable of 367 teraflops.

Roadrunner should be capable of much more. It will achieve its superfast performance using a hybrid design, built with off-the-shelf components.

The computer will contain 16,000 standard processors working alongside 16,000 “cell” processors, designed for the PlayStation 3 (PS3).

Each cell chip consists of eight processors controlled by a master unit that can assign tasks to each member of the processing team. Each cell is capable of 256 billion calculations per second.

The power of the cell chip means Roadrunner needs far fewer processors than its predecessors.

Spare power

This is not the first attempt by scientists to harness the power of the cell.

In August, scientists at Stanford University in California announced plans to distribute a program that could run on gamers’ PS3s.

The cell processor was originally designed for Sony’s PlayStation 3

The folding@home program would tap the cell’s spare processing power to examine how the shape of proteins, critical to most biological functions, affect diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

This distributed computing method uses each individual machine to process a small amount of data, with results fed back over the internet to a central machine where they can be viewed together.

The Stanford researchers say that 10,000 consoles running the program would give a performance equivalent to one petaflop. The team hopes eventually to enlist 100,000 machines.

Although a network of this size would in theory out-perform Roadrunner, the two systems would be used to solve different types of problem.

Computer talk

Both involve huge sets of data that are split into smaller packets to make them more manageable.

On a distributed computing network these small packets can be processed independently, with results brought together at key stages of a project.

For example a PC running the SETI@home project, which examines thousands of hours of radio telescope signals for signs of extra-terrestrial intelligence, processes just a small chunk of data.

Finding a signal does not depend on the outcome of other PCs running the program.

However, on a supercomputer like Roadrunner, the different units must be able to “talk” with each other all of the time, which is vital for applications such as weather simulation which feature a huge number of constantly changing and interacting variables.

When Roadrunner is finished in 2008 it will cover 12,000 square feet (1,100 square metres) of floor space at Los Alamos National Laboratory

IBM says it will start shipping the new supercomputer later this year.
